The Cherokee believe the spirits that come when you die to take you to the Rim are called the Shadow Dancers. The Dance they perform is called the Spirit Dance.  When a person dies,  the Shadow Dancer comes to carry the spirit to the Rim, the dance is showing the Shadow Dancer, dancing around the body.  The Shadow Dancer carries the spirit safely to the Rim to be with Yowa in the Rim.    This is called the Chickamauga Cherokee Spirit Dance
