The Head Mother of the Longhouse
The duties of the Head Mother of the Longhouse are as follows:
1. The Head Mother is someone who works to create good will among the members, but it goes much more than that; when we have visitor’s from other clans, Tribes, or Clubs come to the Indian Creek Band it is the Head Mothers job to make them welcomed and not to judge them on the rules and laws or their personal life.
2. It is also the Head Mothers job to make sure that all members are happy and make them feel welcomed at all times. This does not mean to pass judgment on their way of living, or how they do things.
3. It is mandatory that the Head Mother be on time to all Board meetings, monthly meetings, and events. The Head Mother must always set a high standard for all the members, for the members must look up to the standards she sets.
4. She is in charge of the Monthly Cover dish dinner and to see and do what it takes to set up and clean up after each meeting.
5. The Head Mother is in charge of the set up of all fundraising as written in the Bylaws and Policy and Procedures. To make sure all money taken in from the fundraising is turned in a timely manner. To make sure that the location, date and address for the fundraising and events is known to all the members, as set down by the Nonprofit Tax Laws of the State and United States Government. That all gift’s made to the Indian Creek Band are turned over and accounted for.
6. To ask the other women to help, not order, in doing this job.
7. Any expense that is made must be approved by the Board of Directors and turned in with a receipt showing the cost that has taken place. No money can be paid without approval from the Board of Directors. The job of the Head Mother and the Head Man are very important and carry high responsibility, trust, and must be above board at all times. The Head Mother and Head Man being Native American must be in your heart, and like all Native Americans must use and show the Laws of Totemism at all times. If they do not know the Laws of Totemism then they should look for this information in the Indian Creek Band Library or the Main Office.
