Chickamagua Cherokee Clans
The wolf clan was the largest and most widely spread out as well as the most important in the tribe. Children belong to their mother's clan. No one should marry into their own clan. At one time, long ago, there were fourteen clans and even more further back in time. Extinction or absorption has reduced these clans to the remaining seven.
Duties of the Clans
Bird Clan (Turtle Dove, Raven): were the keepers of the birds, sacred feathers and bird medicine; they were also bird hunters, and messengers.
Blue Holly Clan (Blue, Panther, Wild Cat): were the keepers of medicine for children and keepers of the herbal gardens.
Deer Clan: were fast runners, deer hunters, tanners, trackers and keepers of the deer and deer medicine.
Long Hair Clan (Wind, Twister, Hair Hanging Down): were known for their long hair and elaborate hair do's. The tribe or councils Peace Chief came from this clan.
Paint Clan: were sorcerers and medicine men.
Wild Potato Clan (Raccoon, Blind Savannah or Shawnee, Bear): were gatherers and farmers.
Wolf Clan: War Chiefs came from this clan because of their fierce tempers. They were also the keepers of the wolves, wolf medicine and the only clan that could kill a wolf.
